Home / Strength Foundations
The 12 week starting pointLearn how to strength train properly.
Strength Foundations is one to one coaching for adults 40+ who know strength training would be good for them, but have never really known where to start. Twelve weeks to learn the movements, build confidence with weights and get measurably stronger.
Knowing it matters is not the same as knowing where to start
Most people arrive having already worked out that strength training is worth doing. That part is not the problem. The problem is the gap between knowing and doing: which exercises, how much weight, how many times, whether that ache is normal, and whether you are actually doing it right.
Left to solve alone, that gap usually ends one of two ways. Either nothing happens, or a few enthusiastic weeks happen and then stop, because nothing was building on anything.
What coaching changes
You are not handed a programme and left to interpret it. Every session is coached in person, in a private gym, with someone watching what you are doing and correcting it as you go. You learn what the movements should feel like and why they were chosen for you.
What actually happens
Understand where you are
Goals, training history, confidence, health screening and what your body can currently do. This is the session that decides everything after it.
Teach the fundamentals
Squat, hinge, push, pull and carry, selected and adapted for you rather than taken off a template.
Build technique and confidence
You learn what good training feels like, and stop wondering whether you are doing it right. That confidence is most of what people are actually missing.
Progress gradually
Load, reps, range and exercise difficulty move when you are ready for them, not on a fixed schedule.
Track it
Sessions connect to each other. You can see what has changed rather than guessing, which is what makes it worth continuing.
Build a base you can keep
After twelve weeks you have real technique, real strength and the momentum to keep going.
The goal is not to make the gym your whole life. It is to help you feel stronger and more capable for the things that matter outside it: family, hobbies, travel, sport and everyday life.
A coached process, not a block of sessions
One to one coaching
Every session coached in person in a private gym. No classes, no sharing attention.
Individual programming
Written for your body, your experience and your goals, and adjusted as they change.
Technique instruction
Taught properly from the beginning so you are not building strength on top of bad habits.
Progress tracking
What you lifted, what changed and what comes next. Sessions build on each other.
Health screening
Done before you train, and worked around sensibly rather than ignored.
A regular appointment
A fixed time each week is most of what makes training actually happen.

Once or twice a week?
Once a week works well if you are starting from scratch, have a busy schedule, or want a coached session to anchor your week. You get the technique and the structure, and we build from there.
Twice a week suits you if you want to progress faster, have more time available, or want more coached practice while the movements are still new. Most people find the second session is where technique really settles.
We decide together on the consultation. Starting at once a week and moving up later is completely normal.
The commitment
The initial commitment is twelve weeks, because that is roughly how long it takes to learn the movements properly and see real progress rather than early enthusiasm. Coaching is billed every four weeks. After the first twelve weeks it continues on a rolling basis for as long as it is useful to you.
I will go through the exact numbers with you on the consultation, so you know precisely what it involves before you decide anything.

Common questions
Do I need any strength training experience?
No. This is built for people who have never trained with weights, or who have not done it in years. You are taught the movements from the first session.
Do I need to get fitter before I start?
No. Training starts from your current level. Getting stronger and fitter is what the coaching is for, not a condition of joining.
I am not sure I am a gym person. Is that a problem?
It is one of the most common things people say to me. Sessions are one to one in a private gym rather than on a busy gym floor, which is exactly why beginners find it easier to learn here.
What if I have an injury or a health condition?
Your health is screened before you train and we work around what you tell me. Coaching stays within personal training scope, and where something needs a GP or physio opinion I will say so rather than guess.
How often would I train?
Once or twice a week suits most people starting out. Which is right for you depends on your goals, your experience and your schedule, and we work that out on the consultation.
What happens after the first 12 weeks?
Coaching continues on a rolling four weekly basis for as long as it is useful to you. By then you have the technique and the momentum to keep progressing.
How does payment work?
Coaching is billed every four weeks, and the initial commitment is 12 weeks. I will go through the exact numbers with you on the consultation.
