About 12 minutes from Burgess HillPersonal Training for Burgess Hill
Burgess Hill is not short of places to exercise. What it is short of, for a lot of people, is an hour where somebody is paying attention to you and nobody else. That is the only thing I do.
- Sessions run in Cuckfield, 12 minutes away
- Parents and professionals, 30 plus
- Beginners welcome
Why anyone would drive out of a town this size
It is a fair question. Burgess Hill is the biggest place in this part of Mid Sussex and there is no shortage of options in it. People still make the four mile trip to me, and when I ask why, the answer is almost always the same two words: nobody else. No one waiting on the equipment you need. No one glancing over while you learn a deadlift for the first time at forty seven. No music, no queue, no walk of shame past the front desk when you have not been in a while.
I train one person at a time from a private setup in Cuckfield with parking directly outside. That is the whole model. If you have been weighing up personal training in Burgess Hill and the sticking point has been the environment rather than the exercise, that is worth knowing.
The drive is roughly four miles and about twelve minutes. Long enough that it has to be worth something. Short enough that it is not an expedition, and short enough that you will still go on the Wednesday in February when you would rather not.
The other thing people say is that they wanted a personal trainer rather than a place. Those are not the same purchase, though they are often sold as though they were. A place gives you access to equipment. A trainer gives you someone who decides what you lift, watches how you lift it, and changes their mind when the evidence says they should.
What most people in their forties and fifties get wrong
They chase sweat. Sweat is easy to produce and easy to measure, so it feels like progress. Meanwhile the thing quietly disappearing in the background is muscle, and with it strength, bone density and the ability to get off the floor at seventy without thinking about it. Cardio has its place and I will not take your running away from you. But if you are only ever doing the puffing sort of exercise, you are working hard on the wrong problem.
So the backbone of what we do is strength. Squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, carrying. Loaded properly, progressed slowly, coached rep by rep so you are not guessing about your own back. Most clients come two or three times a week for around an hour, and the first thing that changes is usually not the mirror. It is stairs, shopping, sleep and the stiffness that used to come with Monday morning.
Weight loss you can still be doing at Christmas
Nutrition coaching is included, and I will be blunt about my approach. No banned foods. No meal plan. Nothing weighed into tubs on a Sunday night. I have watched too many people follow a perfect plan for three weeks, hit one wedding or one work trip, and unravel completely. That is not a willpower failure, it is a design failure.
Instead we work out what your eating already looks like, honestly, and change the two or three things that carry the most weight. Usually that is protein, portion sizes and how much you drink. Boring, and it works. If weight loss in Burgess Hill is the reason you are reading this, understand that the food side does most of the heavy lifting, and the training is what makes sure the weight you lose is fat rather than muscle.
Who ends up in front of me
Mostly people between thirty and sixty five with more responsibilities than free time. I am a dad with a demanding full time job, so I coach from inside that reality rather than from a magazine version of it.
- Commuters whose bodies spend two hours a day sitting still
- Parents who have not had a consistent hour to themselves in years
- Total beginners, which is a much bigger group than people assume
- Anyone returning after a decade or two away, often after a health scare or a milestone birthday
- People with a back, knee or shoulder that dictates what they will and will not attempt
- Anyone who wants a fitness coach in Burgess Hill and would rather be coached than entertained
If you have not trained properly in years
Then you are my normal client, not an awkward exception. We will not start with anything heroic. We start with a movement screen so I can see how your hips, spine and shoulders behave under load, and then we pick the versions of each exercise that suit the body you have today. Everything gets easier or harder depending on how you respond, not on what a programme says week four should look like.
You will not be humiliated, timed against anyone, or asked to do something you clearly are not ready for. If a movement causes pain, we swap it immediately. If something sounds like it needs medical input rather than a trainer, I will tell you to speak to your GP first, and I would rather lose the session than get that wrong. You can read more about the way sessions are structured on how it works, or find out a bit about me on the about page.
Training around the station
Burgess Hill has its own station and a great many people here plan their day around a train. If your evening is hostage to a delayed service, an early morning slot is usually the more reliable option, and mornings are the ones my commuting clients defend most fiercely. Whichever you pick, the aim is a schedule you can keep in a bad month rather than a perfect one you keep in a good one. I work with plenty of people who commute out of Haywards Heath as well, and there is a wider picture of the villages and towns I cover throughout Mid Sussex.
Nothing starts until we have talked
Everybody begins with a free, no obligation consultation. It is a conversation, a health questionnaire and a movement screen. I want to know what you have tried, what went wrong, what your week genuinely looks like and what you are actually hoping for. Then I tell you what I would do and whether I think I am the right person for it.
Occasionally I am not. If somebody wants sport specific work I am not the best fit for, or their week clearly cannot support regular sessions, I will say so rather than take the money. And if the drive from town proves to be the sticking point, online coaching is an alternative, though for four miles I would push you towards training in person every time.
If you want a PT in Burgess Hill who will keep it simple, tell you the truth and stand next to you for every set, book the consultation and we will take it from there.

Personal training in Burgess Hill: common questions
How far is Cuckfield from Burgess Hill?
About four miles, so roughly twelve minutes by car. It is a straightforward run and there is free parking waiting at the other end.
Is it worth leaving Burgess Hill when there are closer options?
Only you can judge that, but the people who make the trip do it for the privacy and the fact that I am coaching one person, not supervising a room. If what you want is somewhere to work out unaccompanied, closer is better.
Can I train before catching a train?
Yes, and early morning is the slot my commuting clients guard most closely, because nothing can move it. Tell me your usual departure time and we will work backwards from it.
What if my work schedule changes week to week?
Say so at the consultation. We agree a realistic number of sessions, usually two or three a week, and build a pattern you can hold in a busy month rather than an ideal one.
What does the first session involve?
The first appointment is free and there is no obligation attached. We talk through your history and goals, you fill in a health questionnaire, and I run a movement screen so I can see how you actually move before recommending anything.
