About 10 minutes from BalcombePersonal Training for Balcombe
I am Luke, a personal trainer working one to one from a private setup in Cuckfield, roughly four miles and ten minutes from Balcombe. If you live in the village, you already drive out for most things, and training is no different. Everyone starts with a free consultation.
- Sessions run in Cuckfield, 10 minutes away
- Parents and professionals, 30 plus
- Beginners welcome
Balcombe is quiet, rural and short on facilities, which is a large part of why people live there. It also means that anyone looking for personal training in Balcombe is realistically looking just outside it. I coach one to one from a private setup in Cuckfield, about four miles south, which is roughly ten minutes in the car.
Who personal training in Balcombe tends to suit
Almost everyone I coach is between 30 and 65. Some commute to London from the station on the Brighton Main Line and lose a good chunk of the day to it. Some work locally or from home and find the days blur into each other. Most are parents. Nearly all of them have reached a point where the body has started sending signals it did not send ten years ago.
Beginners are my normal client. So are people who were properly fit once, played sport, and have not trained in any structured way for fifteen years. If you cannot remember the last time you deliberately exercised, that is a completely ordinary place to start from, and it is not something you need to fix before you get in touch.
I am a dad with a demanding full time job, so I am not going to write you a plan that assumes your evenings are free. I build training around the week you actually have, which for people in a village like Balcombe usually includes more driving than they would like.
This tends to suit you if:
- You are already used to driving out of the village for what you need
- You have not trained in years and want to be taught rather than left to guess
- You want one to one attention instead of a gym floor and a membership card
- You want to feel strong and capable day to day rather than hit a photoshoot date
- You would rather have two or three sessions that count than five you dread
It will not suit everyone. If you want to be shouted at, or a plan that bans entire food groups, or a guarantee about how you will look by a fixed date, I am not the right coach and I will tell you so at the consultation rather than take your money.
What the sessions actually involve
Sessions are typically an hour, and most clients train two or three times a week. We start with a warm up aimed at what your body needs rather than a token few minutes on a bike, then work through strength training built on real movements: pushing, pulling, squatting, hinging and carrying. Load goes up gradually as you get stronger. I coach every set, so you are never left wondering whether you are doing it right.
A lot of the early progress is unglamorous. Hips and shoulders that move again. A back that copes with a desk, a car seat or a train seat. Enough strength that carrying logs, shopping or a child upstairs stops being an event. None of this is complicated. It is just done properly and done repeatedly, which is the bit that is hard to do alone. The how it works page explains the full process.
If you arrive with a stiff lower back, a shoulder that clicks or a knee that dislikes stairs, we work around it rather than barge through it. I am not a medical professional. If something needs looking at properly I will say so and point you towards your GP, and once you have been advised we can train sensibly within that.
Nutrition coaching is included from the start. There are no banned foods and no rigid meal plans. Rigid plans last about three weeks, then a late train or a weekend away breaks them and people decide they have failed. Instead we look at how you already eat and change it in ways that hold up in a normal month, including the evenings when you get home late and want something quick.
Why a private setup rather than a commercial gym
If you are driving anyway, the question becomes what you are driving to. A big gym is fine if you already know your way around one and enjoy the environment. But when you are starting again after years off, a gym floor asks you to know where everything is, know what to do, and be comfortable doing it in front of strangers, all before you have lifted a single thing.
In a private setup, none of that applies. The equipment is ready before you arrive. Nobody is waiting for the bench. If something needs breaking down and repeating badly for ten minutes until it clicks, we do that with nobody watching. Sessions start on time and finish on time, which matters when you have a ten minute drive at either end.
The other thing that changes is honesty. One to one, people tell me the truth about how the week actually went, and that is what I need to make the next month work. If you want a sense of how I coach before you commit to anything, there is more about me here.
The drive from Balcombe, and whether it is worth it
This is the only real complication with personal training in Balcombe, so it is worth being straight about it. Cuckfield is around four miles south of Balcombe, roughly ten minutes by car. If you live in the village you already drive to Haywards Heath or Cuckfield for most things, so this is not a new habit, just another stop on a road you know. There is easy parking at the training setup, so the last two minutes are not spent hunting for a space.
People do ask whether a ten minute drive each way is worth it. I would rather answer that honestly than sell it to you. Twenty minutes of driving on top of an hour of training is a real cost, and if you are only going to go now and then, it will not feel worth it. What makes it work is that the session is booked, it is yours, and someone is expecting you. That is a very different commitment from a gym card in your wallet, and it is why people keep going.
If Cuckfield itself is where you live, there is a page for personal training in Cuckfield. If you are closer to town, there is one for personal training in Haywards Heath as well.
Fitting it around work, the commute and family
Village life plus a commute makes the diary tight. If you take the train to London, the day is already long before any training goes into it, so we build around that rather than pretend otherwise. Early sessions suit people who want it done before the day starts. Evening sessions suit people whose mornings belong to everyone else. Working from home days are often the easiest to protect.
Two or three sessions a week is usually the right number. One does not build momentum. Five is a January promise that rarely survives February. Two or three is something most people can actually keep, and keeping it for six months does more than any short burst of effort.
Weeks will fall apart. Trains are cancelled, work overruns, children get ill, the weather does something ridiculous. That is normal and it is not a reason to start over. We adjust and carry on. If your job takes you away regularly, online coaching can keep things ticking so nothing has to restart from zero.
Starting with a personal trainer in Balcombe
Everyone starts with a free consultation. There is no obligation and nothing is sold at the end. We talk about what you want, what you have tried before, and what your week genuinely looks like, including the driving. Then I take you through a health questionnaire and a movement screen so I can see how you move and where we need to take care.
You will come away knowing what training with me involves and whether it fits your life. If I do not think it does, I will say so plainly. If you have been looking for a personal trainer in Balcombe and this sounds like the right approach, get in touch and we will arrange a time to talk.

Personal training in Balcombe: common questions
Do you train people in Balcombe itself?
All sessions run from my private setup in Cuckfield, which is around four miles south of Balcombe and about ten minutes by car. Plenty of the people I coach drive down from the village, much as they would for anything else.
Is a ten minute drive really worth it for a session?
For most people, yes, because the hour is entirely yours and it is booked in your name. If you are honest with yourself and know you will not make the drive regularly, tell me at the consultation and I will say so too. I would rather that than sell you something you will not use.
Where do I park?
There is easy parking at the training setup, so you can arrive a few minutes before your slot rather than building in extra time. I send the details once your consultation is booked.
I commute to London from Balcombe station. When could I train?
Early morning before the train and evening after it both work, and days you work from home are often the easiest to protect. We agree two or three regular slots that fit your real week and adjust them when the timetable or your diary makes that necessary.
What actually happens in the first session?
The first thing is the free consultation: a conversation about your goals and history, a health questionnaire, and a movement screen so I can see how you move. Your first proper session then runs for about an hour and is pitched at what I have seen rather than a guess. There is nobody else in the room.
