Personal Training for Handcross

Handcross is the furthest of the villages I regularly train people from. About five miles, twelve minutes or so. I would rather be upfront about that than pretend it is nothing.

  • Sessions run in Cuckfield, 12 minutes away

Let me start with the awkward part. Five miles is a proper journey to make two or three times a week, and if you are weighing up personal training in Handcross the travel is a genuine factor, not a detail. Twelve minutes there, an hour of work, twelve minutes back. Call it an hour and a half of your evening, gone.

Some people look at that and decide it is fine, because the hour in the middle is the only hour all week that belongs solely to them. Others look at it and know, honestly, that they will start cancelling by week five. Both answers are reasonable. I would far rather you worked out which one you are before you pay me anything.

Who should not make the trip

If what you want is somewhere to put your headphones in and work through your own routine, do not drive to me. You are paying for coaching, not for access, and you would be spending twenty four minutes in the car for something you do not actually want.

If your working week is so volatile that you cannot protect the same slot most weeks, in person training is going to frustrate you. And if you are hoping for a dramatic transformation in six weeks, I am the wrong trainer. What I do is slow, unglamorous and durable. It works, but it works over months.

Who does make it, and why

The people who come from further out are usually the ones who have already tried the closer, cheaper options and found that none of them changed anything. They have paid for memberships they barely used. They have started programmes off the internet and stopped after three weeks because nobody noticed.

What they want is somebody in the room. Somebody who knows what their knee did last month, who moves the weight up when they are ready and holds it back when they are not, and who will notice immediately if they go quiet for a fortnight. That is the thing worth driving for. If you have been looking for a PT in Handcross and finding only classes and memberships, that gap is probably what you have been feeling.

There is another option, and I will mention it fairly

For some people out this way the sensible answer is online coaching rather than driving in. It removes the travel entirely, it is easier to hold together in a chaotic month, and it suits people who are reasonably confident about being left to get on with things between check ins.

It is not as good for a nervous complete beginner, because nobody is stood next to you correcting how you hinge. But it is far better than paying for in person sessions you keep missing. At the consultation I will tell you which of the two I think fits you, even when that means the cheaper one.

What the hour itself involves

About sixty minutes, one to one, in a private setup in Cuckfield with free parking outside the door. We warm up for the work in hand, then move through the things that matter in real life: squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling and carrying. Real load, chosen for the body you have now. Every rep coached. Everything written down so progress is a matter of record rather than a feeling.

Most people train two or three times a week. Given the drive, plenty of my furthest clients settle on twice, which is perfectly enough to make serious progress if the rest of the week is not wasted. We would talk about what you do on the days in between, which for most people means walking and a couple of straightforward habits rather than more training.

Beginners and returners

Rural villages produce a lot of people who have not trained in a very long time and are quietly worried about starting. That is my normal client, not an exception, and the fact that there is nobody else in the room removes most of the discomfort straight away.

  • Never lifted a weight, and would rather not learn in front of strangers
  • Trained years ago and has no idea where to restart
  • Sitting and driving all week, with a back or hip that has had enough of it
  • Wants weight loss in Handcross that survives past February
  • Wants a fitness coach in Handcross who will be honest rather than encouraging for the sake of it

I am a dad with a demanding full time job, and almost everyone I coach is between thirty and sixty five with a similar set of pressures. Nothing I write assumes a perfect week, because I do not have one either.

Food, kept simple on purpose

Nutrition coaching is part of it. No meal plans, no banned foods, nothing weighed into containers. Living somewhere rural makes rigid plans even less realistic, because there is no nipping out for a missing ingredient at half past six. So we build around what is already in your house and your habits.

Protein at each meal. Portions that suit your actual size and activity. An honest look at drinking. Something quick available on the nights when nobody has planned anything. That is most of it. Unremarkable, and it is why people are still doing it a year on rather than two months on.

Getting here, and what else I cover

Cuckfield is roughly five miles from the village and about twelve minutes by road. Parking is free and directly outside, so there is no walk from a car park and no time lost at the other end. Sessions are at a fixed time you choose, and if the road is having a bad day, we adjust rather than lose the session.

People travel to me from villages all over this part of the county, and you can see the wider area across Mid Sussex. If your day tends to pull you east towards the station, the same set up serves people coming from Haywards Heath, which is the nearest large town and where a lot of the commuting in this area starts.

The first conversation is free

It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We talk about what you want, what you have already tried, and what your week genuinely allows. Then a health questionnaire and a movement screen, which shows me how your hips, spine and shoulders actually behave before I ask them to do anything under load. If something needs a doctor rather than a personal trainer, I will say so and ask you to see your GP first.

By the end of it you will know what I would do with you, how often you would need to come, and whether the drive from Handcross is worth it in your particular case. If it is not, I will tell you that too. There is more about the way I work on how it works, and if you are ready to book the consultation, get in touch.

FAQ

Personal training in Handcross: common questions

How far is Cuckfield from Handcross?

About five miles, so roughly twelve minutes by car. It is the longest journey of the villages I regularly train people from, which is why I would rather you thought about it properly first.

Is the drive really worth it?

It depends what you want. For coaching, accountability and being taught properly, most people say yes. If you only want somewhere to train alone, it is not worth twelve minutes each way and I would say so at the consultation.

Could I train twice a week instead of three times?

Yes, and many of my clients further out do exactly that. Two well coached sessions plus sensible habits in between will still get you a long way.

What if the travel does not work for me?

Then online coaching is the honest alternative, and for some people out this way it is the better fit. I will tell you which I think suits you rather than push you towards sessions you will end up cancelling.

What happens at the first appointment?

It is free with no obligation. We talk through your goals and history, you complete a health questionnaire, and I take you through a movement screen. You leave with a clear answer about whether this is right for you.
